SMRC since its inception has developed its work to fill needs in the community, to build the capacity of the community and so that programmes could be handed over to them. One major example of this development style is the Campaign for spinal injury services in the State health care system. The work started from 1985 when SMRC started to work on Rehabilitation to 1999 by providing clinical services, CBR services at village level and research. The work continues linking the centre to community based rehabilitation

The work was initially supported by the National and State Government, British Aid, Aus Aid, OXFAM, DANIDA, Action Aid, Dan Church Aid, SIDA, UNDP, UNICEF, Tata Steel, Dorabji Tata Trust and other small donors. Today the centre is independent.
